YVES-JEAN WYSONG Palmyra Township A funeral mass for Jean Wysong, 63, who died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at home, will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, June 9 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlisle. Burial with military rites will follow at the Palmyra Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8 with a 7:30 p.m. rosary service at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Jean was born on June 16, 1947 in Perry, Iowa and graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1965. He served 3 tours in Vietnam including travels from the Philippines to Japan from 1965 to 1971 while proudly serving in the United States Navy. He came home to marry the catch of his life Sandra Lee (Capps) Wysong in 1970 and together they reared 3 children. Jean is survived by his wife, Sandy; children, Chris (Lisa) and Brian (Wendy) Wysong of Des Moines and Cherie (Chris) Kollbaum of West Des Moines; mother, Yvonne Wysong of Indianola; five grandchildren, Clementine, Jeremiah, Keira, Kally and Caleb; and brother, Bernard Wysong of Des Moines. Jean maintained a strong work hard, play harder philosophy throughout life. He sacrificed many extra hours on the job to support his employer, Iowa Power and Light (Mid-American Energy), for over 35 years. His time on the job allowed him the opportunity to build a wonderful home in the country for his family. He loved to invite friends and family over for a BBQ at the Wysong's, which sometimes transformed into an 8-hour event with up to 50 people in attendance. Jean was quite the host and ensured nobody ever left hungry. An avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman, Jean loved to take Sandy and their children on camping and fishing trips. Despite severely slicing his finger open on one trip and earning him the maritime radio handle "Fillet Of Finger" or also known as F.O.F., he continued to find the big trophies and loved to talk about the one that got away. At the young age of 63, Jean, a husband, father, friend and brother, laid down his working tools. While Jean is greatly missed, those he's touched throughout his life will always love him dearly. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in his name for a memorial to be decided at a later date. On-line condolences may be made to www.overtonfunerals.com.
