William was born in Des Moines, Iowa, January 10, 1941. At the age of 17, he was offered the opportunity to enter the Navy. He served in the Navy for 20 years and achieved the honored titled of Master Chief Petty Officer before retiring. His subordinates remembered him as a fair man, although officers might remember him for his ingenious dealings.
Bill was a self-learner, always reading books and mastering new things. He was a passionate fisherman and hunter and also loved to tinker in his garden. He had a generous heart; if someone was in need, he was there to lend a hand. He loved to take his boat out on the lake and then kick back with the day's catch. He was a wonderful father and grandfather.
Bill was very close to his siblings, Ronnie Walker of Mitchellville, Sherry Locker of Slater, Connie Boylan of Melrose, Florene Schroeder and Corene Ivy of Martensdale, and Bud Walker of Panora. He is survived by his sons, Mason of Des Moines and George of Eagle Creek, Oregon, and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 16 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Overton Funeral Home where the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Memorials may be given in his name to the St. Marys Fire Department or VFW Legion.
