IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Bill"
Smith
March 6, 1931 – January 13, 2024
Services for William Charles "Bill" Smith, 92, of Indianola, Iowa, who passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 in Des Moines, will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola. Graveside services will follow on Thursday at 2 p.m., in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel.
Bill is survived by his wife Sue Smith; children, Torry Simmons, Todd (Maria Augusta "Guta") Smith and Teresa (Dante Joseph II "Joe") Vignaroli; grandchildren, Leecole Simmons, Jill Wells, Elizabeth (Jan Phillip) Meyer, Dante Joseph "Trey" Vignaroli III, Jacob (Lydia) Vignaroli, Marianna Smith and Gabriel Smith; great-grandchildren, Madalyn Boettcher, Vincent Simmons, Charlotte Meyer and Sophie Vignaroli.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Buren (Houx) Smith; granddaughter, Vanessa Simmons; great-grandson, Williams Wells; son-in-law, James Simmons; siblings, Luella Hunnell, Raymond Smith, George Harold Smith and Rueben Smith.
Bill grew up in Pierce City, Missouri and lived through the depression era. He was the youngest of five children and the only sibling to graduate from college. During the Korean War, Bill served honorably in the United States Air Force, as an Aviation Maintenance Officer. He had many interesting stories about those times, which he liked to share. After he was honorably discharged, Bill began working for the Moorman Feed Company. Part of his territory was in Wisconsin, where he met his wife of 65 years. Bill remained with Moormans for over two decades. He and his wife, Sue, then opened the MSI Insurance Company on the Indianola square, where they worked together until retirement.
Bill and Sue had many adventures together, throughout their marriage. Both earned their pilot's licenses and flew a small Cessna 4-seater plane. They square danced and took annual family fishing trips to Canada. Bill loved to fish and he shared this love with his children and grandchildren.
Bill also loved to garden and he carved out a beautiful flower bed for Sue to fill with her all her favorites.
Ever loyal to Missouri, Bill was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan. Bill's life motto was that a man is only as good as his word and he exemplified and taught this value to his children. Bill and Sue were founding members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was a loyal member of Kiwanis International, often seen about town selling tickets for the annual pancake day fundraiser. Last year Bill was recognized as a 60-year member of the American Legion Indianola Post #165.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Memorials may be given, in memory of Bill, to the American Legion Post #165 or Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola.
