Obituary

WILLIAM H. LAIRD Indianola William H. Laird, 83, of Indianola, passed away in Yuma, Arizona on March 21, 2013 due to complication of diabetes. The body has been cremated. Bill was born to Clyde and Hazel Laird on March 4, 1930 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He attended Palo Alto rural school east of Reasnor from 1935-1944 and then attended high school in Newton, graduating in 1948. While in high school, he learned woodworking and furniture building and built a bedroom set and a Governor Windsor desk from lumber cut from his family farm. Following graduation, Bill farmed until 1951 at which time he joined the United States Army serving in Korea until 1953. He returned home and continued farming living in Monroe, Iowa. In 1966, Bill married Marjorie (Ensley) West and moved to Indianola. He was employed by McCoy Manufacturing, who manufactured recreational vehicles. He continued this position after the company was sold to Kayot. Following this he worked for Downing Construction and then became an independent contractor, building and remodeling homes in the Indianola area. Upon retirement, Bill continued doing remodeling and furniture and toy building for his family and grandchildren. Bill and Marjorie spent winters in Yuma. During the rest of the year they enjoyed early morning coffee time with their friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and step granddaughter, Lisa West. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; stepsons, Dr. Steven West (Martha), Dr. Philip West and Dr. Roger West (Libby); 5 step grandchildren; and 1 step great-grandson. Also surviving are a sister, Shirley Eidswick and a niece. Masonic services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 20 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A private family burial will follow at the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Online condolences may be made at www.overtonfunerals.com.
