IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Virginia "Ginny"
Della Vedova
October 2, 1941 – December 6, 2025
Virginia Louise Della Vedova, age 84, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, at Westview Care Center in Indianola, Iowa. Born in Lockman, Iowa on October 2, 1941, to Dominic and Catherine Scala, Virginia lived her life with the love and laughter of family and friends.
A graduate of Albia High School, Virginia went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa. Virginia married Denis Ray Della Vedova on May 5, 1965. She managed the accounting department at Della Vedova Brothers Construction and later at Denis Della Vedova Inc., where her meticulous work played a vital role in the success and longevity of both companies.
Family remained the center of Virginia's life. She loved tradition including yearly shopping trips to Kansas City after Thanksgiving, hosting family gatherings, and drinking coffee on the porch. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Rino C. Della Vedova of Bettendorf and Gina Della Vedova-Piper and her husband Rich Piper of Indianola. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren—Tyler Piper of Omaha, Nebraska; Nicholas Piper of Indianola, Iowa; and Logan Piper of Creighton University—whose activities she supported with unwavering enthusiasm. Whether attending golf tournaments, basketball games, track meets, baseball games, or show choir competitions, Virginia was always there cheering them on.
For twenty-five years, Virginia extended her nurturing spirit to the students involved in Rock Island High School's Competitive Speech and Theatre program coached by her son Rino. Known affectionately as "Mrs. D" she was always there to give love and support as she encouraged performers to push themselves to succeed.
Virginia loved working outside with her flowers and maintaining the landscape around her home. She was a longtime member of a monthly card club and always looked forward to hosting their annual Christmas party.
As a member of the Albia Country Club, she and good friend Mary Woodcock golfed every Wednesday night in league before sharing a glass of wine, dinner, and time to catch up with the other ladies in the league.
As a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, Virginia participated in the Altar and Rosary Society.
She is survived by her children and her sister Mary Crall of Albia, Iowa. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband; father, Dom Scala; mother, Katie Scala; niece, Lisa Crall; and nephew, Greg Crall.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday December 16, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 730 Benton Ave West in Albia Iowa, with a private gravesite service following.
Virginia will be greatly missed by those whose lives she has touched. In honor of Virginia's memory, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research or Westview Care Center. The family requests that those wishing to send flowers send poinsettias that will remain in the church throughout the holiday season in her memory.
