Obituary

Services for Virginia L. Clendenen, 90, of Indianola, Iowa, who passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024, will be held 11 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2025, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held two hours prior to service from 9 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home.

Virginia (Heuberger) Clendenen passed away in Indianola, surrounded by her family. Born in Chapin, Iowa, on October 4, 1934, to Charley and Grace Heuberger, Virginia grew up on a farm alongside her two brothers and two sisters. She was the youngest of the crew. She attended school in Chapin before pursuing secretarial training, after high school.

Upon graduation, she moved to Des Moines and began her career in the insurance industry, where she met the love of her life, Jim. The couple married on November 15, 1953 and embarked on a life filled with adventure and devotion.

Virginia and Jim's journey together took them to many places. They first lived in Indianola, where they welcomed their first child, a daughter Julie. Next, they moved to Elkhorn, Wisconsin, where their second daughter, Becky, was born. Later moves brought them to Pecatonica, Illinois, and then Avon Lake, Iowa, where they had their son, Jimmy. Subsequent moves brought them to Des Moines, then to Audubon before they finally returned to Indianola, where they purchased an insurance agency.

A dedicated mother and homemaker, while her children were young, Virginia later joined the workforce alongside Jim at their insurance agency. She also worked for a CPA firm in Des Moines, before retiring from Principal Financial Group in 1999.

Virginia lived a life marked by resilience and creativity. A three-time cancer survivor and a survivor of a subdural hematoma in her brain that required her to relearn basic skills like walking and talking. She demonstrated remarkable strength and determination. She was a talented quilter who also enjoyed crocheting and loved a good game of Wah Hoo. She also enjoyed working in her flower garden.

Virginia and Jim enjoyed taking motorcycle trips, square dancing, playing cards with their card club, attending their grandchildren's events, and just hanging out with family and friends.  Virginia's legacy is one of love, strength, and perseverance. She will be deeply missed.

Virginia is survived by her children, Julie VanderLinden, Becky (Jeff) Gripp; grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Klaas, Justin (Megan) Gripp, Jessica Pontier, Beth DeMello, Michael Poundstone; great-grandchildren, Trevor (Nicole Whitlock) Poundstone, Gage Twombly, Rylan Klaas, Jake, AJ and Kasey Pontier, Sophia DeMello, Palmer Gripp; brother, Don (Maxine) Heuberger; many nieces, nephews and other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, James; son, James R. Clendenen; son-in-law, John VanderLinden; parents, Charley and Grace Heuberger; siblings, Doris (Max) Neal, Charles (Etta Mae) Heuberger and Mary (Harold) Meints.

Memorials may be given in her name to Suncrest Hospice.
