Family graveside services for Virgil Lee Halterman, 73, of Bussey, who passed away Monday, May 25, 2020, will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 30 at the Palmyra Cemetery, Palmyra, IA. A Live Stream can be located on Virgil's obituary page of our website for those unable to attend.
Virgil Lee Halterman, 73, of Bussey, Iowa was born on September 25th 1946 to Virgil M. Halterman and Wilma O. Halterman in Indianola, Iowa.
Virgil attended Indianola High School where he graduated in 1964. In December of 1968, he married Victoria Hook with whom he fathered two sons, Wray Lee Halterman and Randell Stacy Halterman, they later divorced.
On February 25th 1978, he united in marriage to Shirley Harrah. In 1979, they brought (Rene) Wilma Irene Halterman into the world. Virgil enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and in his younger years horseback riding. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends telling stories and just being overall conversational. Virgil had a big heart and was always willing to help those in need.
He was a hardworking individual who had many different careers through the years. He had worked as a foreman, mechanic, and a truck driver. At the time of his death he worked for Reilly Construction where he operated a cat and scraper for the past 26 years.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley, and sons, Wray Halterman of Arizona, and Randy Halterman of Arizona; daughter and her husband, Rene and Kevin Valentine of Unionville, Missouri; his step-children, Tim Brylie of Pleasantville, Iowa, Penny Jergensen of Winterset, Iowa, Tammy McKinney of Winterset, Iowa, and Steve and Tracey Brylie of Newton, Iowa; grandchildren, Dylan Valentine of Ottumwa, Iowa, Tanya and Robert Goodyear of Maryville, Missouri, Kristina McCain and Coleman Mayer of Unionville, Missouri, Jeremiah McCain of Unionville, Missouri and many others as well as many nieces and nephews; his sister and her husband, Maude and Martin Bishop and childhood friend, Milton Chumbley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilma and Virgil Halterman as well as his brother, Gordan Halterman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Virgil's name to the American Cancer Society.
