Obituary

SUSAN M. PERKINS Susan Michelle Perkins passed away early Sunday morning, February 22, 2015 at her home in the presence of her loving husband, mom, sister and friend. Susan was born August 17th, 1957 in Des Moines Iowa to Lloyd and Jeanenne Glascock. First born of four children, her brother and two sisters share many memories of playing school, spending time on their grandparents farm every Sunday, and family vacations camping and boating. She participated in a singing group called New Life Singers where she met her high school sweetheart, Donald Perkins, and the two were married on June 18, 1977 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola, Iowa. She was a dedicated mother to Nathan and Sarah, always supporting their various endeavors of sports and music. Dedicated to community involvement from organizations such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Special Olympics, Helping Hands, and other youth centric programs gave her an opportunity to live out the gospel by serving others. Treasured time was also invested with her many nieces, nephews and friends sharing her love of gardening, crocheting, reading, sewing, and teaching through each special moment. Her heart and soul was poured into over 28 years of teaching, the last 15 years with her special needs kids. Just as in any conversation with Susan you were made to feel like you were the only one in the room, the same gregarious philosophy was applied with her students showing them that they were valuable, just the way they are. She graduated from UNI with a BA in elementary education and later received her masters degree from Morningside college in Special Education. She truly made a positive difference in the lives of these youth. Many may be surprised to learn she had battled cancer for the last seven years. Her desire was to remain committed to what her calling was: in humility count others more significant than herself. We will remember her life as truly a model of giving. Susan is survived by her husband of 37 years, Donald; children, Nathan (Christina) Perkins, of Crewe VA and Sarah (Stuart) May of Roanoke IN; grandchildren, Hannah, Lydia, Julia, Lauren, Kennedy, Libby Ann, Pearce, Sophia and Oakes; mother, Jeanenne Glascock; brother, David (Diane) Glascock; sisters, Laura (Tim) Phillips and Judy (David) Hutton; nieces, nephews and many specials friends. She was preceded in death by her father Lloyd and grandson Cameron. She very much enjoyed spending countless hours giving and participating in various organizations, however glowed the most as a devoted wife, doting mom, and adoring Nana to her 10 grandchildren. You certainly are our treasure. Memorial services for Susan M.
