Sue Tinder, age 93, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening, December 3, 2014. She was born July 8, 1921 near Russell, Iowa to Lester Roland Van Nice and Junia May Van Nice. She attended country school in Lucas County and graduated from Russell High School in 1939. She married Albert Tinder in October of 1941 at Chariton, Iowa. After Al returned from military service during WW II, the couple spent their lives together in Iowa, living in Iowa City, Tipton and Urbandale. Following Al's death in July of 1988, Sue moved to Indianola to be near her son and grandchildren. Sue was employed outside the home as a bookkeeper and teller at banks in Tipton and in the Des Moines area. She also did secretarial work for the conference office of the United Church of Christ in Des Moines. After moving to Indianola, Sue cared for her brother, who lived on a farm near Russell, and worked at Helping Hand. Sue was an avid reader and continued to "read" through recorded books and magazine articles even after losing her eyesight. She was an accomplished cook, seamstress and upholsterer. Sue was preparing an evening meal for Dick the night she died. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Al Tinder, brother Lester Van Nice, and sister Isabelle Winship. She is survived by her son Dick Tinder, grandchildren Byron Tinder, Sarah Keyser and Aaron Tinder, and great-grandchildren Ellen Keyser, Will Keyser, Kylie Tinder, Blake Tinder and Owen Tinder. A visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola on Monday, December 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9.
