Obituary

Carol "Sue" Douglas, daughter of Harold and Ellora (Garrison) Hypes was born December 18, 1946, in Indianola, Iowa and passed suddenly from this life Friday, June 23, 2023, at the age of 76 years old.

Sue grew up and attended school in Indianola, later receiving her GED.  As a child she enjoyed roller skating, going to movies, and playing with the neighborhood kids.

She was united in marriage to Lonnie Bryant Douglas on June 17, 1967, and inherited three little girls, Debbie, Tammy, and Jodi. Together Lonnie and Sue had Connie and Tina which completed their family.  Sue was a stay-at-home mom and housewife, always making sure the household was running smoothly and keeping everyone inline (mostly Lonnie).

Sue occasionally worked away from home. She was an Avon lady for years and in 2020 retired from the Northside Bar and Grill where she cooked for many years and then later bartended/waited tables. She was liked and loved by all and was always ready to give you her opinion whether you wanted it or not. She loved playing pool and was a member of the Double "D" Bar and Grill pool league. Even though she hadn't played in years, she had the pleasure of showing her sons-in-law and grandsons that she still had it by playing a friendly game of pool with them. She could still run the table.

Sue was very proud of her needlework, making cross stitch Christmas stockings for her family, making a total of 11, which she enjoyed seeing displayed at Christmas time. Another treasure to cherish are the quilts that she made and had made for the many milestones in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's lives. "An heirloom her family will cherish for years to come."

Sue was known for her gardening and flowers, being very particular to choose the very best plant, always weeding, watering, canning and tending to her garden. Sue also enjoyed playing cards and games whether it was with family, friends, or her grandkids; Pitch, Old maid, Phase Ten, Rummy, or Yahtzee. Yahtzee was her favorite and looked forward to playing each week with her friends Judy and Marie. In earlier years while Lonnie was at work Sue and the girls spent a lot of time at Grandma & Grandpa Hypes house in Indianola, playing Bingo with her parents was a favorite pastime, (I can imagine them all up in heaven playing and yelling BINGO!).

Another pastime favorite was going to the boat and playing the quarter machines. When asked if she ever wins, she would reply "of course". Rarely missing a Wednesday night as that was "free" gift night.  Those free gifts became grab bag Christmas gifts and the kids and grandkids looked forward to playing our white elephant game.

Sue was mostly known for her cooking, there really wasn't anything she could not make.  Chicken and noodles were her specialty and she enjoyed teaching her daughters and granddaughters how to make those beautiful egg noodles.  Fried chicken was another family favorite that we will miss.  Her secret was frying each piece slow and easy, getting that chicken perfectly golden and crispy.  Her advice for making anything was not to rush it.

But what she most treasured was her family. She loved her family and they were her main priority. She loved being a wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma. She always said she HAD the very BEST kids, sons in-law, and grandchildren and was ready to debate if you tried to tell her differently. She was happiest when she was with her family. She was proud of her daughters and nothing brought her more joy than being with them. She loved to watch her children and grandchildren play various sports and watch them grow and thrive. She leaves her gifts of her wisdom and great memories to her husband Lonnie and daughters Connie and Tina.

Those relatives who proceeded Sue in death were her parents, Harold and Ellora Hypes; brothers, Jerry and Dave Hypes; father and mother-in-law Les and Wilma Douglas; and step-daughter, Tammy Douglas.

Sue is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lonnie; daughters, Connie (Alan) Brommel, Tina (John) McCuddin; grandchildren, Don (Sidney) Brommel, Alyssa (Max) Cornelison, Caylin (Carter Chedester) Brommel, Bailey, Carli, and Josie McCuddin; great grandchildren, Leila Jean, Hazen, Oaklee Rae; step-daughters, Debbie (Dave) Matney, Jodi Douglas and families; Brother, Randy (Diane) Hypes as well as other relatives and many many friends.
