Steven L. Darling, 64, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at his home surrounded by family and friends after a short battle with cancer.
Steve was born July 22, 1946 in Fontanelle, Iowa to Robert and Mary Darling. He was a 1964 graduate of Fontanelle High School and served his country in Vietnam for two years following his graduation.
Steve married Diane on December 25, 1966 in Massena, Iowa. They made their home in Indianola for 40 years where they raised their three children. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. As a welder and union member he spent much of his career fighting for equal rights and pay for his fellow workers.
His biggest enjoyment in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He had a great appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed trapping, hunting, boating, camping, fishing and he was an avid NASCAR and Minnesota Viking Football Fan.
Survivors include his wife, Diane and sons Doug (Arla) Darling--Jacob and Nicholas of Johnston, Iowa, Brad (Angelique) Darling ----Taylor, Morgan, Logan and Gavin of Indianola, Iowa and daughter Kim (Chris) Iiams---Colton and Ashley of Ames, Iowa. He is also survived by brother, Robert (Sheryl) Darling, sisters, Mary Rose Gosselin and Lorraine (Cliff) Stark, mother and father-in-law, Elmer and Darlene Mayer and sister-in-law Norma Darling. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceeded in death by his parents and brothers, David and Larry Darling and Cecil Williams.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 28 at Overton Funeral Home, 501 W Ashland Ave, Indianola. Friends may visit with family from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 27 at Overton Funeral Home. A private burial service will be held at a later date.
