SONNY McELWEE Pleasantville Services for Sonny McElwee, 74, who passed Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, following a tragic auto accident, will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, February 17 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Indianola. Sonny was born in Hilversum Holland on December 1, 1938 to Jan and Mary VanderHeide. Sonny was united in marriage to her beloved husband, Merrill, on February 1, 1961. To This union two daughters were born. Sonny met Merrill in Hilversum while he was serving in the United States Army. After Merrill's discharge, he returned to Hilversum to marry Sonny, the love of his life. They then made their home in Pleasantville on the farm for the next 52 years. Sonny worked at Pleasant Care for 45 years. Patients and family members found great comfort in Sonny's warm and caring hands. She retired in 2012. Sonny enjoyed the outdoors tending to her beautiful flowers. She loved to decorate her home and have family gatherings, making many family traditions that will always be cherished. She was so young in spirit, loving to spend time shopping and gambling with her girls and spending as much time as she could with grandkids. She is survived by her husband, Merrill; two daughters, Marja (Mike) Kieliger of Pleasantville and Conny (Denny) Brown of Indianola; two brothers, Bill and Dowa VanderHiede; four sisters, Sue Peterson, Janneke Warmerdam, Ineke Vandyken and Marja VanderHiede; three grandchildren, Joe Brown, Josh Kieliger and Erika Kieliger; two great-grandchildren, Trenton Kieliger and Chloe Johnson; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Darlene McElwee; sister-in-law, Carolyn Watts; and many nieces, nephews and friends. We were not ready to lose you. We still had so many plans. We will love and miss you everymoment of our lives. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Overton Funeral Home, where family will be present to greet friends. Memorials may be given to the family in her name for a memorial to be decided at a later date.
