Obituary

Shirley Zimmerman, 83, of Indianola peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, September 22, 2023.

Shirley Ann Davey Zimmerman was born May 8, 1940 to John Rex and Mayme Rosella Davey near Milo, Iowa and remained a lifelong resident of Warren County.  She married Lawrence LaVerne Zimmerman May 30, 1958 and the Lord blessed their union with two children and 49 years of happiness.

Shirley's love for others shined through her work from her first job as a clerk at Harrison's Dime Store, later caring for patients, clients, and staff at Indianola Chiropractic Clinic, Iowa Clinic at Methodist, Penn Medical Center, and a private law firm.   Her favorite job might have been assistant activities director at Good Samaritan, where she was able to pray for residents and their families, prepare devotionals, and create crafts to encourage those in her care.  In retirement, LaVerne and Shirley sold his finely-crafted wood decorations with Shirley's hand-painted embellishments.

Shirley thoroughly enjoyed people and loved keeping in touch with them, including her childhood friends from Beech and Indianola schools.   Her high school reunion this fall might be the first one she'll miss.   Her home was always beautifully decorated for every season as she would host co-workers, friends, and family who looked forward to her highly prized homemade pizza nights.

Faith was the foundation of the Zimmerman family home.  Shirley's parents started the Indianola Christian Union Church, now known as Thrive, and LaVerne was a charter member of the Indianola First Assembly of God Church which his parents helped start.   As a young couple, LaVerne served as a deacon and Shirley served wherever needed including ladies ministries, youth director, teaching in children's church, Bible School, and Sunday School.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and an infant brother, a niece and nephew, and her husband, LaVerne.  She is survived by her brother Glenn Davey, her son, Randy (and wife Rochelle) Zimmerman, daughter Tamara (and husband Lowell) Scott, Beth Zimmerman (Brooke's mom), grandchildren Jessica (Steve) Gilbertson, Blake (Heather) Scott, Brooke (Kolby) Moore, Acacia Scott, Skylar (Kaitlyn) Scott, 9 great grandchildren, and a host of beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Overton's Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.   Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to services at the funeral home where family will be present to greet friends.  Memorials may be given to Strong Roots Christian School in Indianola.
