Shirley Chumbley was born in Pleasantville, Iowa on October 15, 1934. She passed peacefully on February 4, 2023, at the Village in Indianola.
Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, on Friday, February 10, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with a time of Remembrance held at 4:30 p.m.
Her childhood was spent on the farm in the Warren County area. Shirley graduated from Milo High School, where she was proud to be a member and captain of the girls basketball team.
Shirley married Wilbur Chumbley in 1953. They enjoyed 67 years together. Shirley had a career in bookkeeping and administrative assistant work including employment at Chumbley's Conoco, Warren County Treasurer's office, and Iowa Power in Des Moines.
She and Wilbur raised their children in Indianola. In 1995, Shirley and Wilbur retired to Table Rock Lake near Kimberling City, Missouri. They returned to Iowa in 2012 and resided at the Village in Indianola.
Family vacations each summer were a highlight. Holidays and Sunday dinners with extended family were special times. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren. She and Wilbur enjoyed traveling during their retirement years. Shirley was always happy to spend time visiting with friends.
Shirley is survived by her children Brenda (Howard) Ness, Sherry (James) Sines, Jeff (Barbara) Chumbley; grandchildren Joseph (Sarah) Ness, Jenna (Sam Kuster) Ness, Thomas (Dina) Sines, Benjamin (Sandra Davidson) Sines, Lauren (Ian Cook) Sines, and Tara (Felix Timmons) Chumbley; great-grandchildren Joaquin Sines, Bianca Sines, Charlie Ness, and Kole Kuster; sister Marilyn Heemstra, nephew Rodney (Berta) Heemstra, and niece Marcie Wilkinson. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur, parents Bill and Thelma DeHoet, and grandson Jason Ness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Life Hospice Services.
