Shelley was born on May 6, 1959 in Lincoln, NE and grew up in nearby Seward. She was the Class of 1977 valedictorian and received All-State honors in several sports and in band. She went on to the University of Nebraska where she continued to excel in academics and athletics. She maintained a 4.0 GPA and earned All-Conference honors in softball. After earning her master's degree, she taught and coached at Fairbury High School in Fairbury, NE. In 1985, Shelley came to Simpson College as a professor in physical education and head coach of the volleyball and softball programs. She worked diligently to bring success to each program. Her teams won many Iowa Conference Championships and earned several NCAA Division III tournament bids. During the late 1980's, Shelley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which gradually decreased her ability to walk and led to her retirement from coaching softball in 1995 and volleyball in 1998. She was inducted into the Simpson College Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000. Shelley married Michael O'Meara in 1993 in Indianola and to this union was born the joy of her life, Alison, in 1997. As her health continued to decline, she patiently endured long periods of hospitalization, always keeping a positive outlook and never giving up hope. Her life was a great example for all.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Michael O'Meara; daughter, Alison of Indianola; parents, Verl and Helen Scott of Lincoln, NE; sisters, Sheri (Doug) Dawson of Lincoln, NE and Stacy (Russ) Nelsen of Blair, NE; including from both sides of the family 10 nieces and 9 nephews.
