Sharon Lorraine Schafnitz died Tuesday morning, July 12, 2011, attended by loved ones at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 16 at Overton Funeral Home, 507 W. Ashland Ave, Indianola. A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 15 at the funeral home with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Born in Bexar County Texas, June 15, 1944, to Arthur and Margaret Haner (Hill), Sharon graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas. She lived and worked in various places throughout her life. She met the love of her life, Russell G. Schafnitz, in 1976 and followed him to Montana where they were both employed by Trans World Services in Yellowstone National Park. They raised their family and spent countless hours camping and fishing. She loved spending time outdoors and gardening. Sharon and Russ returned to Texas where they lived in the hill country of Bandera, Texas. She worked as a County Clerk until the death of her husband in 2001. She resided in Iowa for the past ten years and worked at the Polk County Courthouse for the Clerk of Court in Des Moines. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her stepson Franklin Kelly Hardy (Schafnitz). She is survived by her sister Cynthia Holt of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Ronda Forsyth (Robert) of Harper, Texas; stepson Russ Schafnitz Jr. (Denise) of Indianola, Iowa; stepson Chris Hardy (Diane) of Milo, Iowa; and her three grandchildren Cortney Hein (Chad), Corey Forsyth and Megan Schafnitz.
