IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Scott Alan
Higens
April 15, 1978 – August 3, 2024
Services for Scott Alan Higens, 46, of Martensdale, Iowa who passed away Saturday, August 3, 2024 at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines, will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 8, 2024, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Cremation will follow services.
Born on April 15, 1978, Scott lived a very active life until the end. He touched many lives of all ages.
When Scott was a boy, he loved playing around the neighborhood, collecting Ninja Turtles, and Transformers. He still has all of them, even though he told family he lost them! Scott had many childhood friends growing up and continued contact with a couple. His best friend, Nick Middleton has been there up until the very end. Scott loved rock music and attended concerts as often as possible. His Monte Carlo had a custom speaker so he could blast his favorite artists like U2, Ozzy Osbourne, and Pink Floyd.
Scott graduated high school in 1996, which was soon followed by him falling in love with one of his good friends' sister. Lisa was 15, but the age gap didn't hinder these two from realizing they were meant for each other. Their lives soon intertwined and became one in 2000 when they said their marriage vows in front of family and friends. Their marriage became a family when they were blessed with two amazing sons, Dylan and Tyler. Scott cherished his boys and was so very proud of them. Scott and Lisa's song has been and always will be "In Your Eyes," by Peter Gabriel.
Scott had a career in flooring, something he excelled at. He began this career when he started working for B&B Hardwood Flooring until around 2004 when he moved on to Carpet One. He installed hardwood floors until he could no longer do manual labor. Carpet One was gracious enough to make him Warehouse Manager where he worked full-time until October 2023.
Scott was diagnosed with non-small lung cancer in 2015. He was given a very short time to live, but proved cancer was not a match for his strength. His cancer stayed in his chest until 2019, when he had to endure his first craniotomy. His brain tumor decided it wasn't done and in 2021, he had his second craniotomy. He went on for another two years fighting strong until that stubborn tumor veered its ugly head again in 2023. This is when he had his third and final craniotomy. Dr. Freeman always told Scott, "you are the Captain of this ship!" Those of you that know Scott know how stubborn he is! Dr. Freeman and his nurse, Angie, did whatever Scott asked for and fought the fight with him until his final day. His cancer brought out his fighting alter ego "Hulk!" He collected everything Hulk and his good friend Jesse McAninch tattooed a Hulk on his chest.
When Scott wasn't collecting everything Hulk, he was ghost hunting. He researched everything he needed to capture the other side. He went to several overnight ghost hunts this last year with friends. His other love was gardening. He loved his yard and would spend countless hours getting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds to come visit. These last couple of months when he had trouble sleeping, he would be outside messing with his flowers at two in the morning. His lavender flowers were especially his favorite. He planted several vine flowers this spring and said they will never grow well, but they are sprouting with life. One of Scott's biggest passions this past year was collecting Funko's from his childhood. He has every Ninja Turtle, Transformer and Hulk Funko you can find. It is very possible he spent more money on them than he told Lisa about! Dylan and Tyler would take him out to various stores searching for these prized possessions. Scott loved this time with his boys.
Scott is survived by the love of his life and wife, Lisa and their sons, Dylan and Tyler; mother, Priscilla (Jeff) Penrod; father, Roger Higens; sister, Molly (Jamie) Schoop; brother-in-law, Jody (Cathy) Miller; sisters-in-law, Lisa (Van) McNeal and Tammy (Bill) Beaber; nieces and nephews, Kollin Miller, Konner Miller, Kash Miller, Amanda Schoop, Eddie Schoop, Billy Beaber, and Ashley Beaber.
Knowing Scott was knowing a fighter!
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Overton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family or to The Pink Tractor Foundation.
