Obituary

Please don’t call me Shirley. I will not answer. My name is Ann.

Ann (Pool) Smith was born on March 23, 1938 in Indianola, Iowa to Harold and Sara (Robinson) Pool. She attended and graduated from Spring Hill School. As mom said, I have lived in Warren County all my life. My last home was in Martensdale, just 8 miles from where I was born.

Ann married her best friend, Howard Smith, on November 10, 1957. Three children were born to this union, Pat (Ron) Vaughn, Randy (Natalie Kass) Smith, and Jeff (Lori) Smith.

Ann had several careers during her life, but she said the most important ones were wife, mother (to many besides her children), grandma, and great-grandma. She loved to go dancing with Howard, create and finish quilts, fish, travel with family and friends, and socialize. In her “spare time”, Ann was a member of the Martensdale Fire Association, sat on election boards, a small business owner, attended her weekly quilt group and shopped for fabric.

Ann passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at her home with family at her side.

Survivors include her children; grandchildren, Amanda (Corey) Blackburn, Brandon Vaughn, Bryon (Sara Shelvock) Smith, Megan (William Woodall) Smith, Zach (Kelli Zomer) Smith, Nick (Katie Mahoney) Smith and her great-grandchildren, Sam, Jonah, Isabelle, Deacon, Owen, Benjamin, Harrison, Maizy and one on the way; brother, Robert (Jackie) Pool; and many nieces, nephews and great friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; parents, Harold and Sara Pool; brother, Richard and his wife Irene Pool; sister, Judith Pool; and nephew Jonathan Pool.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 20, 2026 at Overton Funeral Home. Cremation will follow services. Inurnment will be held in the Norwalk Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 2026 at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Martensdale Fire Association or the Linn Grove United Methodist Church in her memory.
