RUTH M. SMITH Des Moines Ruth M. Smith born April 27, 1919 in Des Moines, IA, to Robert and Blanche Anderson. Ruth passed away Monday April 28, 2014, surrounded by family and friends at the Taylor House on the east side of Des Moines, only a few blocks from where she lived during her younger years. Ruth graduated from East High in 1936. After completing school she worked for several firms as a book keeper (a job she truly loved.) On January 12, 1946 she married her husband of 58 years David T. Smith. For many years they owned and ran a successful kitchen design and installation company. After retirement they had a winter home in Punta Gorda, FL. Ruth made Afghans', slippers, tea towels for members of the family and new babies. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with and bragging about her large family and Christmas Eve dinners. She is survived by her two sons and their families, David (Susan), Darwin (Sally); five grandchildren, Erik Smith (Kimberley), Phillip Smith (Stephanie), Stacey Gibson (Jeff), Shelley Petersen (Kevin), Tyler Smith (Michelle); sixteen great-grandchildren (two more arrivals due early August and early October) and one great great-granddaughter. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband David and brother Robert Anderson. Services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, May 2 at the Indianola Heights Christian Church, 3139 SE 8th Street, Des Moines, IA where family will gather one hour prior to services.
