Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 26, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial with military rites will follow in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Russ, the son of Russell and Pearl Overton, was born June 22, 1920 in Carlisle, Iowa. He made Indianola his home for most of his adult life. He proudly served his country during World War II in the Army 482nd AAA BN SP Battery "C". He had a varied civilian career, working for the Indianola creamery, Firestone, and Dy-Co Weyerhauser, and eventually retiring from Mutual of Omaha. He was a member of the Indianola Noon Lion's Club and a 35-year member of the Warren Post #165 American Legion. A St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings fan, he coached and encouraged children in sports. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He enjoyed sharing his vegetables and homemade salsa, canned pears, and pickles.
Russ is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alta of Indianola; a daughter, Rosalyn (Douglas) Gugler of Salina, KS; seven grandchildren, Deanna (Eric McLuen) Overton, Phillip Gugler, Benjamin Gugler, Karen Gugler, Alicia Overton, McKenzie Overton, and Trevor Clatt; and two sisters, Beverly Byers and Arlene O. Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, R. Richard and R. Elaine Overton , his son Alan J. Overton, and an infant sister Deloris Overton.
Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 25, 2007 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present 3:00-5:00 p.m. to greet friends. Memorials may be given to Warren Post #165 of the American Legion.
