IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ross Kendall
Dhabolt
April 11, 1961 – August 5, 2018
Ross Kendall Dhabolt passed away at 3 a.m., Sunday, August 5, 2018, with his wife, Diana Engle Dhabolt, by his side at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA.
He survived as long as he did because of his outrageous, goof-ball sense of humor and male-pattered-stubbornness.
Ross was born in Spencer, IA, grew up in Des Moines, lived in Tallahassee and Lakeland, FL before returning to Des Moines to care for his mother.
He married "the best thing that ever happened" to him on September 19, 2014 in Indianola, IA. Yes, a die-hard Green Bay Packer Backer married a Chicago Bear.
Ross' father, Lyle A. Dhabolt, taught him boxing – Blue-Eyed Babe, the next Great White Hope (even though his nose started bleeding before the bout) and to play pool (Ross could barely see the table). He loved baseball (a die-hard Cubs fan) and played Little League. Ross was also an accomplished tennis player, making finals. As an "adult", he was in several leagues – bowling, pool shark, softball (loser buys the beer and games stopped for Hill Street Blues), and golf ("If I sucked at golf, I'd be happy").
While in Lakeland, FL Ross worked for the Capitol Police and managed a restaurant. He learned every aspect of construction and built a construction company from the ground up.
He is survived by his wife, Diana E. Dhabolt of Indianola, IA; brother, Don C. (Christine) Dhabolt of Sun Prairie, WI; sister-in-law, Ivorienne A. "Vori" Dhabolt of Fort Wayne, IN; uncle, Crist S. (Jeannie) Green of NC; mother-in-law, Claudia W. Gilmartin of Berwick, ME; father-in-law, Richard M. (Nancy) Engle; sisters-in-law, Jennifer K. (Bruce) Radl of Stow, MA and Adele E. (Paul) Schneider of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law, Richard H.W. (Elizabeth) Engle of Hampton, VA; and several doting nieces and nephews spread across the country.
Ross was preceded in death by his father, Lyle A. Dhabolt; mother, Judith L. "Judy" Dhabolt Shelledy; brothers, Herkey and Dennis Dhabolt; uncle, Kenton Green; father-in-law, Jack Gilmartin; and his namesake, grandfather, Ross Kendall Green.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Bring your best "Ross Stories" to be shared and put in a book.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, America's Teaching Zoo in Moorpark, CA, and/or Kiya Koda Humane Society in Indianola, IA.
