Obituary

Services for Roger Allen Seymour, 61, of Moravia, Iowa, who passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Indianola Grace Evangelical Free Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Churchville.

Roger was born on March 27, 1962 to Charles (Chuck) Seymour and Wilma (McConnell) Seymour. He was raised on a farm just outside of Martensdale and graduated from Martensdale-St. Mary's High School. He then attended Des Moines Area Community College where he received his training for his career as a HVAC service technician.

In 1988, he was united in marriage to Gina Endres.  Together they raised their three children in Indianola. Roger retired after nearly 30 years at Central Iowa Mechanical and he and Gina retired full-time to their property at Sundown Lake in southeastern Iowa.  He so loved spending time with his kids and grandkids from introducing them to the joys of fishing and boating to attending baseball, volleyball, basketball, and swimming events, as well as dance and vocal concert recitals.  Or he was perfectly happy with simply reading a book to them while they snuggled in a recliner.

Roger courageously battled a rare cancer, synovial sarcoma, for the last 7 ½ years and did so with ferociousness, grace and dignity.  Family and friends see him as a warrior and hero, as he participated in several clinical trials paving the way to finding a potential cure to this relentless disease.  We will never forget how hard he fought to stay here with us and how he lived life to the fullest between treatments, not giving cancer one more second of his life than necessary.

Roger is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gina Seymour; children, Michael (Jennifer) Endres, Shannon (Jon) Starkweather and Sean (Amber) Seymour; grandchildren, Layla Endres, Kori Rose Starkweather, Hayden Allen Endres, Brayden Starkweather and Bennett Roger Starkweather; mother, Wilma Seymour; siblings, Brenda Dooley, Greg (Chris) Seymour and Brad Seymour; sister-in-law Chris Seymour Knudson; brothers-in-law, Mark (Dale) Endres and John Endres.  He was preceded in death by his father, Chuck Seymour and brother, Brian Seymour; sister-in-law, Lori Jordan; and father-in-law, John Endres.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.  Roger requested that his memorials be casual events – he was not a suit and tie kind of guy.  Feel free to wear your Hawkeye, Local 33, lake life, fishing or hot air balloon apparel – whatever you relate to your friendship with Roger.

Memorials in his memory may be given to the Pink Tractor Foundation, Taylor House Hospice or Sarcoma Research at the Holden Cancer Center at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
