Robert McKinley, 91, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Monday, January 13, 2025 at UnityPoint West Des Moines Methodist Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial at Norwood Cemetery in Lucas County. Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to services.
Bob was born September 11, 1933 to Gene and Martha McKinley in Chariton, Iowa. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served as a Communications Sergeant during the Korean war from 1953 to 1955. He married Charlene McKinley in 1955 and together they raised three children in Des Moines before moving to Washington, Illinois in 1966. In 1981 Bob and Charlene moved back to Des Moines. Bob was a dedicated employee for Colonial Baking Company as the office manager for 30 years. Upon his retirement, he and his late brother Jim worked together at JEMCO Systems selling and delivering infrared heating systems for many years. Bob was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend who loved music and playing his baby grand piano. Bob thoroughly enjoyed his family and was very proud of his lawn and garden. Bob never shied away from organizing, planning and hosting family reunions. He loved to hear about the travels and adventures of many family members. He loved to play cribbage and card games with family and friends. Bob was an avid reader and he also enjoyed investing in the stock market.
Bob is survived by his son, Randy (Rene') McKinley; daughter, Tammy (Steve) Neville; son, Phillip (Janis) McKinley; his grandchildren, Chris McKinley, Erin Hightower, Brian Holcomb, Krista Holcomb. Bob was the proud great-grandfather to Dakota, Elaina, Zayden, Zoey and a baby boy arriving soon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlene of 53 years; sisters, Betty Farrell, Audrey Pugh, Jane Schebel; brothers, Don McKinley and Jim McKinley. He will be missed by all.
Memorial contributions may be made, in Bob's memory, to the American Red Cross.
