Obituary

Services for Robert "Pete" Lull, Jr., 83, who died Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Regency Care Center in Norwalk, IA, will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 21 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial, with military rites, will be held in the Montpelier Cemetery, Patterson, IA. Robert "Pete" Lull Junior, son of Robert and Blanche Lull was born on the family farm southwest of Patterson, IA on March 21, 1928. Pete graduated from Patterson High School in 1946. He had a love for sports and working on the family farm. He played baseball and basketball in high school. After high school he was paid to pitch for many local semi-pro baseball teams and in 1947 tried out for the New York Yankees at Birdland Park in Des Moines. After one semester at Drake, he was drafted into the Army in December of 1950 with the 114th Combat Engineers during the Korean War. He was stationed at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin and then after a stint at Fort Riley, Kansas building bridges, he was transferred to Fort Lewis in Seattle, Washington. Instead of being sent to Korea, he was told he wouldn't serve overseas because his brother, Clyde, was killed in France during WWII. He was promoted to Sgt. and spent the next five months in charge of the records section until being discharged on December 16, 1952. Pete married Janet "Kay" Singer on July 27, 1956 in Smith River, California. After living for a short time in Des Moines, they moved to Martensdale on April 1, 1957. They had two children Deb and Doug. Pete started work in January 1956 for Iowa Paint Company and was a salesman there for 34 years until his retirement in March 1990. Pete was also active in his community. He helped start the Martensdale Fire Department in 1960. He was a member for 40 years serving as Fire Chief for 20 years from 1965 to 1985. He was on the Martensdale City Council for 14 years. His love for sports was evidenced during his umpiring baseball and softball games for over 30 years. He also volunteered keeping score at MSTM basketball games for 18 years. Pete also enjoyed golfing, fishing and going to numerous activities with his children and grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; parents, Robert and Blanche (Hyser) Lull; siblings, Rex, Clyde, Loyde, Roy and Anna Lull; and brother-in-law Bud Williams. Survivors include his children, Debra (Dave) Thomsen of Norwalk and Doug Lull of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Ben "B.J." Wiedmann of Martensdale and Matt Wiedmann of West Des Moines; sister, Mary Jo (Max) Tucker of Macksburg, IA; brother-in-law, John (Marge) Singer of Wilson, NC; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Williams of Crescent City, CA. Visitation will be held 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 20 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Martensdale Fire and Rescue, Martensdale-St. Marys Athletics, or Patterson United Methodist Church.
