Robert “Bob” Dean Fridley, 94, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away peacefully at The Village, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, surrounded by family and friends who visited him daily.
Bob is survived by his children, Mark and Tracy; grandchildren, Casey (Jade) and Chelsea; and great-grandchildren, Olive and Nixon. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 73 years, Doris A. Divine; his parents, Harold and Bertha (Ferguson) Fridley; and his brother, William “Bill.”
Bob was born April 21, 1932, in Indianola, Iowa. Raised during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era, he learned early the values of hard work, perseverance, and stewardship of the family farm. After the death of his father when Bob was 16, he and his brother took on responsibility for the farm.
Following graduation from Indianola High School, Bob joined the United States Army in 1953 and served honorably during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant. While stationed in Lawton, Oklahoma, he married the love of his life, Doris. After his military service, they returned to Cool, Iowa, where they built a life together spanning nearly 73 years.
Farming, land, and business defined much of Bob’s life. Through hard work and a remarkable understanding of agriculture, he helped preserve the family land as a Century Farm. His knowledge of crops, commodities, and farm management was extensive, and he generously shared what he knew with others. He later helped establish People’s Company in Indianola and expanded his real estate interests into Missouri, where he and Doris enjoyed time at their home on Table Rock Lake.
Bob was also a pilot and boat captain who loved the freedom of flying his Bonanza and spending time on the lake with family. He was an avid racing fan who rarely missed a sprint car event at Knoxville Raceway and followed IndyCar racing throughout his life. He and Doris also enjoyed square dancing with friends in their younger years.
Those who knew Bob recognized that beneath his tough exterior was a kind, generous, and deeply loyal man. He loved sharing stories and knowledge, but his greatest pride was always his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought out a softer side that he cherished.
Bob appreciated life’s simple pleasures—a BLT, a slice of Doris’s pie, a good conversation, a race at Knoxville, or a day on the lake. He enjoyed taking friends to dinner at Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, driving his ruby-red Corvette, collecting farm toys, and enjoying nature—unless it happened to be eating his crops.
From growing up during the Dust Bowl, serving his country, preserving family land, building businesses, and creating generations of memories, Bob leaves a legacy far greater than acres or possessions. His greatest legacy is the family he loved, the land he cared for, the knowledge he shared, and the values he passed down.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to service from 9:30 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Bob may be given to FFA or Warren County Conservation.
The circle remains unbroken.
