Robert Matthew Benton, 77, of Carlisle, Iowa died Thursday, November 21, 2024 at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Robert was born June 2, 1947 in DuQuoin, Illinois.  He was raised by his parents, Charles and Imogene Benton and lived happily in DuQuion with his sister, Marian.  After graduation from high school, he attended Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa.  He graduated in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in political science and then earned his law degree from Drake in 1974.  Bob was a partner in the Stuyvesant and Benton law firm in Carlisle from 1980 until retiring in 2017.

He married Sue Dunagan on August 16, 1969.  Their marriage resulted in the birth of their son, Russell, on June 5, 1970.  He married the love of his life, Linda Barkley, on January 2, 1987.  Linda had two wonderful sons from her first marriage, Chad and Tyson Jennings.  Unfortunately, their father died in 1988.  Bob adopted Chad and Tyson on December 26, 2000 at ages 27 and 23.'

Robert Benton was a good man who dearly loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren.  He deeply cared about an important element in life… to continually seek to understand who God is.

Bob is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Russell Benton (Melinda), Chad Jennings (Wendy), and Tyson Jennings; his sister, Marian Youngblood; grandchildren, Nathan Jennings, Abigail Jennings, Mason Moody, Riley Benton and Molly Jean Benton; and his darling Westie, Fiona Fae.

Bob will be very happy to greet you in heaven at the time of your demise.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, November 24, 2024 at the Carlisle United Methodist Church.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the church.  Memorials in memory of Robert may be given to the Carlisle United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
