Richard Thomas Johnson of Churchville, Iowa died Friday, February 11, 2022, surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Richard's wish was to be cremated.  A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Richard was born to John "Jack" Thomas Johnson and Genevieve Smith Johnson on March 9, 1948.  He attended Martensdale Community School and graduated in May of 1967.  He married Jackie Tomes in 1970 and together they had three sons, Chad, Eric, and Justin.

Richard had a passion for farming and livestock, especially Angus cattle.  He worked as a livestock manager in Kingdom City, Missouri, Logan, Iowa, and North Platte, Nebraska before moving to Prole, Iowa and establishing his own farm, where he raised Angus cattle and row crops, as well as installing field tile.  Richard retired from farming and tiling in 2008. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as well as watching them exhibit livestock and participating in their extra-curricular activities.

He is survived by sons, Chad (Danette) of Des Moines, Eric (Kelly) of Prole, and Justin of Churchville; grandchildren, Breanna Owen (Stetson), Scottie (Liz) Sarsfield, Alex (Brian) Hogue, Emily, Olivia, Alissa, Jack, Cole, Lucas, Dillon, Maclane, and Maddox; great-grandchildren Jaden, Katelyn, Adelynne, Kellen, Anna, Beau, and Lucy; siblings, Joanna (Bill), Dennis (Judy), Madonna, and Dan (Jan); along with many nieces, nephews, and his beloved pizza crust loving dog Doc.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Charles, and Theodore, and nephew Dennis Junior.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the family for a future memorial.
