Obituary

Richard (Dick) Lloyd Janes, 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

Richard was born on September 15, 1933, in Jewell, Iowa, to Harry and Charlotte (Swenson) Janes. He graduated from Webster City High School with the Class of 1951. On January 24, 1954, he was united in marriage to Jeanne (Hansen). Together they built a life rooted in love, family, and community in Webster City, Iowa, where they resided for 59 years. In 2014, Richard and Jeanne moved to Indianola to be closer to their children.

Richard dedicated 43 years of service to Bell Telephone, which later became Northwestern Bell and eventually part of US West. His strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to his job were a source of pride throughout his long career.

Above all, Richard cherished his family. He is survived by his children: son, Keith Janes; daughters, Barbara (Gerald) Knoll, Susan Prather, and Cheryl (Jeff) Harvey; son, Lloyd (Cheryl) Janes; and daughter, Karen (Alan) Archibold, all of Indianola. He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Roger, brother-in-law Virgil Rockow, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanne; his parents; son-in-law, Wayne Prather; his sisters, Charlene Rockow and Donna Klein and brother-in-law, Jack Klein.

Richard will be remembered as a true jack of all trades who was always tinkering in the garage or around the house. He had a special love for working on small engines and cars, rarely turning down a chance to take something apart and put it back together better than before. Whether fixing a mower, restoring an engine, or helping someone with a repair, he found joy in working with his hands. When not tinkering, he also enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing, appreciating the quiet moments on the water and the simple pleasure of a good catch.

Richard loved playing the guitar, filling his home with music and sharing that joy with family and friends. His steady presence, mechanical ingenuity, love of the outdoors, and quiet devotion to those he loved will be deeply missed, and his legacy lives on in the generations blessed to call him husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.

Following Dick’s wish’s, no service will be held, a Private family Celebration will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Unity Point Hospice in Dick’s memory.
