IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard Jerry
Hunter
April 6, 1931 – June 9, 2023
Dr. Richard Hunter, M.D., an always kind, dear, generous and sweet gentleman, passed away on June 9, 2023 at his home in Indianola, Iowa, with his family at his side. He was 92.
Richard was a healer his entire adult life and continued to practice medicine full time until he was 80 years old. He was also an avid triathlete, having completed numerous full Ironman Triathlons in Kona, Hawaii, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and across the United States. He continued to compete at a high level, often finishing first or second in his age bracket, well into his late 70s. He completed his last triathlon in Des Moines at the age of 85. He always said, "exercise is medicine." That philosophy kept him active and fit until he was 90 years old. He also loved to paint and write.
Richard's journey spanned the American landscape, from his small hometown of Paragould, Arkansas to Purdue University, Medical School at the University of Arkansas, the Menninger Clinic in Kansas and then to some of the best medical centers in Southern California before returning to the Midwest to retire near his family in Iowa. It also spanned the American century. Born during the Great Depression, he remembered living through Pearl Harbor and, at the age of 10, hearing FDR's address to the nation on that day of infamy. An aviation enthusiast and amateur pilot since his teens, he lived to see men fly to the moon and back. Then he lived more than five more decades through wars, recessions, pandemics and wonders. He never stopped finding the good in life, remarrying in his 70's and devoting his last twenty years to being a loving husband and doting grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Kay Hunter, his first wife Charlotte, his brother-in-law Rob Brown, and many great friends. He is survived by his wife Nona Faith, son and daughter-in-law David & Jessica Faith, and grandson Davy Faith, all of Indianola, Iowa, sister-in-law Tina Brennan and niece Norah and her family in California, niece Jeanne and her family in Washington, sister-in-law Carrie Brown and nephews Rhys and Dylan in Oregon and lifelong friends from Western Military Academy (class of 1949), including Jerry (Emily) Mayer and Chuck (Sue) Walker.
Special thanks to the angels from Wesley Life Hospice care in Indianola for their loving & compassionate care during the final four months of his life. His nurse Lisa & personal care aide Selene were quite literally Godsends. We could not have asked for better care.
Arrangements are being made through Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. His final resting place will be beside his parents in California. To sign and online condolence, visit our website at www.overtonfunerals.com.
