Obituary

Richard Louis Hockett, 68, of Des Moines, died Friday, August 6, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Born January 19, 1953, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Edgar and Evelyn (Stark) Hockett.  He married Lacey Kinslow on June 22, 2013.He was a 1971 graduate of West Burlington High School. As a child, Richard raised chickens and was very active in 4H.  He started mowing lawns as a teenager and eventually became owner and operator of his own lawn mowing company which he continued successfully until recently when he developed health issues. Richard worked for Umthun Trucking for a year before moving to Des Moines and continuing as a truck driver for TMC Trucking. He taught safety instruction, load securement, and was a road repair coordinator, until his retirement in 2019.

Richard was on the West Burlington Volunteer Fire Department for five years and served with the Burlington Fire Department for seven years. He also served with the West Burlington Police department reserves. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Indianola.

Richard loved attending the races with his children, grandson Dale, and watching their sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Lacey; son, Jeremy (Tanya) Hockett of Madrid, IA; daughter, Katie Hockett of Norwalk, IA; stepchildren, Jocelyn Irvin of Wilmington, NC, Christina Guzman and Jasmine Guzman of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Colton Anderson, Alicia Milburn and Dale Hockett; siblings, Janet (Don) Atherton of Georgetown, TX, Nancy (Gary) Deen, Dan (Bev) Hockett and Sue Schowalter all of West Burlington, IA; Aunt Barb (Lyle) Ireland of Burlington, IA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.   He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one brother Edgar Jr.

Funeral services for Richard Hockett, 68, who passed away Friday, August 6, 2021 in Des Moines, will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2021 at the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. prior to service. Cremation will follow services.
