IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rebecca Alice
Hebert
September 20, 1949 – March 7, 2024
Rebecca Alice Hebert, 74 of Windsor Heights, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024 after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer, in Des Moines. There will be a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:30 a.m. followed by a lunch on Saturday March 30, 2024 at Giovannetti Community Shelter located at 8900 Douglas Ave, Urbandale, IA 50322.
Becky, as she was affectionately known to all, was born on September 20, 1949 to Lewis and Opal Ryan in Southern Iowa. She was 7th of 10 kids and grew up in Garden Grove, Iowa. After graduating from High School, Becky married her high school sweetheart, Jerrell Lewis, and began her journey as a soldier's wife and doting mother of 3.
She held many jobs throughout life, but is famous for being a tremendous cook. With the patience of a saint, she taught many of her grandkids, nieces, and nephews the art of baking. Her kitchen was filled with pictures of numerous joyful memories of the little cooks licking beaters and bowls. When Becky wasn't filling her home with the irresistible smells of cooking, she would be singing and playing her guitar with friends and family. Becky and her siblings were well known for their sing-a-longs and shenanigans. At weddings, funerals, and festivals they brought joy to all those around them.
Becky and Jerry shared a tremendous bond of marriage and parenthood until their children spread their wings and began families of their own. She was supportive and loving to friends and family members alike. Through those many years, she welcomed countless relatives and friends into her home and made them part of her family. If you needed Becky, she would be there for you eager to let you know that you were loved.
In 1999, Becky started a new journey with her second husband, Joseph Hebert, in Sealy, Texas, where they would regularly host grandkids. After Joe retired, they moved back to Iowa, where they lived in Truro, Johnston, and finally in Windsor Heights.
Regardless of where Becky was, she continued to grow her family. Everyone who engaged in a conversation with Becky left with a smile. She would walk the mall with her friends and cruise the aisles of the grocery stores in Windsor Heights looking for bargains and leaving a wake of happiness. She had an effortless ability to create and spread joy because she was filled with compassion and positivity.
Becky helped so many people in her life, but exerted heroic effort helping her husband Joe in his battle with cancer until his passing in 2021, when Becky began her own fight with cancer.
She was a sports fan, fiercely dedicated to cheering on the Hawkeyes and Chiefs. She was equally dedicated to her fight against cancer and enjoying every day with friends and family as we all cheered her on.
Becky was preceded in death by her parents Shorty and Opal, husbands Jerry and Joe, sister Barb, brother Sam, granddaughter Amber, and so many other friends and family that she knew would be waiting for her arrival to pick up a guitar and start singing with them again.
Becky is survived by her children, Jeri Ann (Patrick) Ekleberry, Pamela Connors, Doug (Marissa) Lewis and Deana Bergmann; grandchildren, Jordan Pitts, Kaleb (Jamie) Baranek, Sydney (Blake) Brommel, Monica Crowley, Sam (John) Kerr, Miranda Lewis and Eris Lewis; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Karen Morgan, Dan (Evelyn) Ryan, Myra (Raymond) Wagehoft, Vivian Ryan, Jane McGlumphry, Deb Abel and Mike (Audrey) Ryan.
The family suggests that donations in Becky's honor can be made to a foundation set up by the Mission Cancer & Blood Center who took excellent care of Becky and her family throughout her battle with Cancer. https://www.missioncancer.com/our-foundation/patient-assistance/
