Randy Craige Cameron was born February 26, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Merlin Cameron and Ruth Cover Swenson. When asked, he would always add it was a Saturday.
Growing up Randy was involved in Boy Scouts, achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout. While attending Roosevelt High School, class of 1967, he played in several rock n roll bands. One was Sir Richard & The Squires. They traveled around the Midwest on weekends playing high school dances. After graduation, Randy joined the Navy. He served 1968-72.
He was an accomplished photographer. He had his own darkroom and did weddings and graduations. Randy was a 50 year member of the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 33. He worked at AJ Allen Mechanical Contractors the whole time.
While in the Navy, Randy found the love of sailing. He taught himself to sail on a small Sunfish in the middle of the Indian Ocean. After returning to Iowa, he bought his first sailboat and started sailing a Sweet 16 at Saylorville. Eventually he moved up to a 25’ MacGregor. His last sailboat was a 30’ Acadian Yawl.
Randy retired at 55 yrs of age and spent many days and nights on the boat. Deb would join him weekends and evenings. In retirement Randy found a new hobby, the gun range, where he connected with a group of retired guys who were at the range every morning when it opened. He quickly became friends with the employees and other members.
Randy was involved with his church. Over the years he worked in the nursery, helped with Royal Rangers and last, served on the security team. He was united in marriage to Deb (Hunnell) Cameron on September 30, 1989.
He is survived by his wife Deb; son Craige (Stephanie) Cameron and , Joshua Hunnell; daughter, Jessica Cameron; grandkids, Tyler McNeeley, David, Alexis & Cameron Jones, Alex & Henry Hunnell, and Cayden Cameron; sister: Viki Cameron (Brian Lenz); brother: Gary Cameron; and bonus daughters: Michelle Miller & Barbie Stillings.
