Obituary

Polly Madden, 94, passed away at The Village on June 28, 2005.  Visitation will be held at the Overton Funeral Home on June 30, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.  A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. July 1, at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Indianola.

Polly Madden was born February 10, 1911, in Mina, SD.  She graduated from Coe College in 1934 with a major in journalism and was the first female editor of the Coe College Cosmos.

On October 25, 1935, she married Kenneth M. Madden, whom she met at Coe. During their courtship, he went dancing with her and she went fishing with him.  They later knew his early interest in dancing, like her interest in fishing, had been exaggerated; but they celebrated more than fifty-three years of marriage.

Polly is survived by three children: Mary McKee, of Bella Vista, AR (Harris); Dr. Ross Madden of Dubuque, IA (Sally); and Ken Madden of West Des Moines, IA (Mary); eight grandchildren:  Margaret Utterback, Laura McKee, Deborah Zippel, Amanda Kutoloski, Kent Madden, Tom Madden, Anne Madden and Amy Madden; and seven great grandchildren: Drew Utterback, Kaitlin Utterback, David Utterback, Alyssa Boge, Daniel Zippel, Erica Zippel, and Tanner Kutoloski.  She is also survived by two brothers, Everett Price (Mary) and Allan Price (Kathleen) of Aberdeen, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth M. Madden, two brothers, Daniel and Robert and her parents, George and Mabel Laulo Price.

The Maddens moved to Indianola in January of 1951. Polly worked at the Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune as Society Editor for ten years.  She was active in community affairs and Trinity United Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and coordinator, President of UPW, and ordained Elder.  She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, Chapter BP of P.E.O, and Shakespeare Club.  She served for ten years on the Indianola Library Board, several years as Chairperson.  She was instrumental in establishing the Planned Parenthood Center of Indianola.  She and Ken were Village Pioneers.

She had many avocations, especially playing and teaching bridge.  She was a breast cancer survivor, and arranged her chemotherapy treatments for Mondays to avoid conflicting with her Friday bridge club.  She loved, wrote, and published poetry, had a keen interest in politics and local issues, and was well known for sharing the bounty of her prolific vegetable and flower gardens.

Memorials may be designated to The Village, Trinity United Presbyterian Church or Coe College.
