Services for Phyllis May Schimelfenig, 91, will be held at 11 am Tuesday, December 20, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Phyllis was found deceased in her home in Indianola on Friday, December 9, 2016.
Phyllis was born in Atlantic, Iowa on May 7, 1925 to Glen and Carrie (Anderson) Davis. Phyllis, the oldest of six siblings, was raised in rural Atlantic. After graduating from Atlantic High School in 1943, Phyllis moved to Des Moines, and worked as a seamstress during World War II producing uniforms for the US military. After the war, Phyllis met her husband, John R Schimelfenig. They were married on September 17, 1949 and raised five children in the Indianola area. In retirement, John and Phyllis were avid members of the Southridge Mall Walkers Association and developed life-long friendships with other mall walkers. Phyllis was a passionate gardener, meticulous lawn curator, and avid Iowa State University sports fan to the end.
Phyllis is survived by daughter, Pamela Wood (Darrell) of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Ann Miller of Williamson; daughter, Carla Schimelfenig (Ricardo Martinez) of Nevada, IA; son, Steve Schimelfenig (Dorene) of Indianola, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include sisters, Sharon McDermott-Jensen and Connie Wailes of Atlantic and brother, Gary Davis of Fairbury, NE. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Glen Schimelfenig; and brothers, Ronald and Darrel Davis.
