Phyllis Audrey (Shaw) Minnis, resident of Indianola, IA, went to be with the Lord Monday, July 3, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA at 81, surrounded by her children and family.
Inurnment of ashes will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2020 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa.
Phyllis was born December 21, 1935 in Nebraska to Henry and Beulah Shaw. She found a passion for helping people and went to nursing school in Arizona. She worked for nursing homes, Meredith Printing Company, Westview and Good Samaritan in Indianola, and in-home care up until her retirement. As a twist of fate, Phyllis met her future husband's nephew who encouraged her to start corresponding with Marines in the field.
On February 17, 1956, she married James Earl Minnis at the Church of Christ in Phoenix, AZ, where her father was the preacher. They were married for 61 beautiful, joy-filled years that contained children, foster children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was a Christian woman with a beautiful, caring soul who impacted the life of those she came into contact with. She was fortunate to have moments that were filled with laughter that surrounded her throughout the years.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, James Minnis; children, RaLynne (Tony) Arreguin of St. Paul, MN, Jimmy Jr. of Indianola, LeNita (Lynn) Bourne of Des Moines, Gerri (Greg) Davis of Milo, IA, and Aubrey (Jen) Minnis of Norwalk, IA; and brothers, Paul (Colleen) Shaw and Richard (Linda) Shaw of Arizona. Her legacy has brought 25 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, as well as, 180 foster children into the Minnis family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; great-grandchild, Simon; grandson-in-law, Nate; and nephew, Buddy.
A Celebration of Life gathering, due to Phyllis's wishes, will be held 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 8 at the Indianola Church of Christ, 1112 E. Iowa Avenue, Indianola, IA 50125. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Phyllis's name to the family and mailed to PO Box 163, Milo, IA 50166, to be used to create a memorial site in her honor.
