A Memorial Mass for Otto Thomas Bussanmas, 82, of Bevington, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2023 at Shrine of The Assumption Catholic Church, Churchville with inurnment of cremains following in the Calvary Cemetery, Churchville.
Otto Thomas Bussanmas "Otto" was born to SJ (Jim) and Aletha (Leach) Bussanmas in 1941. Otto departed this Earth on April 8, 2023. Otto is preceded in death by his parents (SJ (Jim) and Aletha); brothers Jack, Jimmy, Phil and sister Joann (Bailiff); son, Otto Thomas (Tom); grandson Harold; and great grand child David. Otto is survived by his wife Maxine (Crow), sons Jeffery (Jeff) and Kenneth (Ken); brother Jerry (Alice) and sister-in-laws Katherine and Teresa; 6 grandchildren (Heather, Sean, Nick, Sarah, Jeffrey, Danielle) and 9 great-grand children.
Otto received his education at Martensdale St. Marys where he graduated in 1959. Otto married his high-school sweetheart, Maxine (Crow) in June, 1959. Otto and Maxine welcomed three sons to the world, Jeff, Ken and Tom during their time together. Otto began his employment with Maytag and worked various jobs throughout his years including working with the Department of Transportation before buying Bussanmas Conoco, in Bevington, in 1970. Otto took the gasoline, convenience store and two bay garage and evolved it into Bussanmas Towing and Recovery gaining and maintaining shop services and several tow trucks for everything from cars to semi tractors over the years.
Otto ran the business side by side with Maxine and their son (Jeff) for 52 years. Otto was a member of the Towing and Recovery Professionals of Iowa, and a life member of the Assumption Church in Churchville. Otto retired from the towing and recovery business at the beginning of 2022 and continued to operate B&B Storage in Bevington.
Otto enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This would include his love of travel and seeing places throughout the United States with Maxine and some cruises. These adventures included a cruise in Alaska and motor home trips that included white water rafting. Otto spent his retirement days traveling and going to the Indianola theater with Maxine for matinee films.
Otto is survived by his wife Maxine; sons, Jeff (Deanna) Bussanmas and Ken (Susan) Bussanmas; daughter-in-law, Michelle Bussanmas; grandchildren, Heather (Ramsey) Nichols, Sean (Jessica) Bussanmas, Nick (Randi) Bussanmas, Sarah Malone, Jeffrey Bussanmas and Daniel Pate; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Alice) Bussanmas; sisters-in-law, Catherine Bussanmas and Teresa Bussanmas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Tom Bussanmas; parents, Sylvester and Aleatha Bussanmas, sister, Joan Bailiff; brothers, James Bussanmas, Phillip Bussanmas and Jack Bussanmas.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Memorials may be given to Shrine of The Assumption Catholic Church.
