Obituary

ORVAL L. HAKES Urbandale Orval LaVerne Hakes of Urbandale, Iowa went home to be with his Lord on April 24, 2012 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa. Orval, son of Forrest D. and Harriett (Walker) Hakes was born on January 8, 1922 in Indianola, Iowa. He grew up around the Norwalk/Martensdale, Iowa area and graduated from Martensdale High School. He was a member of the Willow Creek Baptist Church. Orval served his country proudly in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from 1943 to 1945 obtaining the rank of Corporal. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on December 8, 1945, he returned to Martensdale to farm in partnership with his father. On February 14, 1942 he married his childhood sweetheart and best friend, Leora "Arlene" Wright. He and Arlene could be found through the years playing duplicate and tournament bridge. Both achieved "Life Master" status. After farming, Orval worked for Doherty Construction in Des Moines, Heningson Steel in Atlantic and Payless Cashway as manager of new construction. While residing in Algona, Iowa from 1957 to 1964, Orval owned and operated Crawford-Hakes Insurance. Orval returned to the family farm in 1965 after losing his father. He was a master cabinet maker and built all of the cabinetry in the family farm home. Once retired, Orval and Arlene moved to Urbandale, Iowa to be closer to the Bridge House. Arlene died August 5, 2009. Orval continued to play bridge with his partner Bob, as well as Terry, Dennis and other bridge friends. Orval loved to engage his family and friends in spirited conversation on many topics related to current affairs, business, sports and politics. Orval was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, his father and mother and his sister Opal Jean Smith. He will be lovingly missed by his three children, Sandy Christian and her husband Jerry of Story City, Becky Parker and her husband John of Adel and Denny Hakes and his wife Tonya of Muscatine. He leaves behind nine grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, first cousin and friend, Wilma Dunn, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Bright Kavanagh House for the comfort they afforded Orval during this time of transition. The family would encourage, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be directed to the Willow Creek Baptist Church in Des Moines, or Hospice of Central Iowa in Des Moines. Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, Iowa on Monday, April 30, 2012 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral beginning at 11:00 am. Interment with Military Honors will be held following the service at Norwalk Cemetery, Norwalk, Iowa.
