IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mildred "Millie"
Louise Amos
November 8, 1928 – August 4, 2023
Services for Mildred Louise "Millie" Amos, 94, of Indianola, who passed away Friday, August 4, 2023 in Des Moines, will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Overton Funeral Home with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Millie was raised in Lacona, Iowa, right in the middle of two brothers. Her favorite things to do as a child were riding ponies and playing in the sand by the creek. She played softball, basketball (post position) and the cornet during her high school years, graduating from Liberty Center High School in May of 1946.
A couple of years after graduation, Millie married a kind-hearted farmer, Harold Dean Amos and together they led a wonderful life on the farm for many years with their daughters, Caroline and Linda.
Millie loved the farm whether it was working along-side dad driving a tractor, baling hay, milking cows, raising hogs and chickens, or taking their pony hitches to events and parades. Sometimes they drove either the Model A Pickup or Model A Sedan.
Even though Millie loved helping on the farm, she always had a job outside the home, beginning in 1946 after graduation she was the Chief Operator with Bell Telephone for 12 years. She also worked at Iowa Book Bindery and Great Plains Bag. Millie worked at Herschel for 19 years from March of 1975 to July 1994. After retiring from Herschel, she began working in retail first at Pamida and later many of you saw her helpful smile at McCoy True Value.
Millie enjoyed crocheting, her many dolls and jewelry. During her six-plus years at Windsor Manor, she attended many activities offered and especially enjoyed Bingo, Crafts, Devotions and the Sunday Morning Church services.
Millie was a great cook, too. She could put a meal on the table in record time and fed many hay hands when it was summer hay season. A few specialties that come to mind are: Coconut Cream Pie, Cherry Pie, Angel Food Cakes, Homemade Ice Cream, Homemade egg noodles that made their way into Chicken and Noodles. She also baked many wedding cakes and delivered Valentine Cakes to area businesses, and decorated all of the family birthday cakes.
Millie is survived by her daughters, Caroline (Brad) Johnson and Linda Wickett; grandchildren, Bryan (Alex) Wickett, Amy (Jeremy) Reinert, Shelby (Justin) Goad, Dalton (Maggie) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Colton, Jace, Lola and Blaire; and sister-in-law Velma Turner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dean Amos, parents, Melvin "Lee" and Leta Turner, son-in-law Kevin Wickett, brothers, Donald Turner and Orville (Joyce) Turner.
Visitation will be held prior to services from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Millie's memory to Center Chapel Church.
