She grew up on farms in near Huxley, Slater and Sheldahl. After graduating from Sheldahl High School in 1943 and attending business college in Des Moines, she worked as a secretary in a law firm. She received the Governor's volunteer Award for her work at the Helping Hand. However, if you asked Mildred what was important in life, she always answered that it was family. She truly enjoyed each successive generation of childrenjust watching them play and enjoy life. She will be remembered for her humor and compassion and for her willingness to dig in and play with the children, for catching grasshoppers and making enough "pokey" eggs to fill growing boys, and for coloring and playing cards and checkers with the great-grandchildren, for her homemade noodles and cherry pie, and for her quiltsher hundreds of quiltssome of which are laid away for the next generation because, "there will always be more babies born." Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings, two sons-in-law, and one granddaughter. She is survived by her daughters, Dixie Aller of Des Moines, Sandra (Dennis) Dop and Debbie Martin all of Indianola, and Gale (Randy) Hines of Mitchellville; fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
