IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Tennies
Slykhuis
September 23, 1943 – January 22, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael "Butch" Slykhuis on January 22, 2025, at the age of 81, following a courageous battle with COPD. Mike was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend who touched the lives of many.
Born and raised in Marion County, Iowa, near the town formerly known as Red Rock, Mike spent his early years surrounded by the rich farmland and close-knit community of the area. He attended Pleasantville School, where he began building the many lifelong friendships that would define his life.
Mike worked for many years at John Deere in Moline, Illinois, before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. A proud U.S. Army veteran, Mike served as a Rifle Sharpshooter, reflecting his discipline and dedication to his country.
Mike was well known throughout Pleasantville and the surrounding communities as a skilled lawn mower and small engine repairman. His dedication and expertise earned him a reputation for both his craftsmanship and his willingness to lend a helping hand. Beyond his work, Mike found joy and fulfillment in rebuilding engines, a passion that brought him countless hours of satisfaction and pride.
One of Mike's greatest joys in life was riding his Harley Davidson, which symbolized his spirit of freedom and adventure. For many years, he explored the open road, savoring the wind on his face and the beauty of the outdoors. Though he had to set aside riding in recent years due to illness, his love for his Harley remained close to his heart. His passion for riding remained a constant source of happiness and cherished memories.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; his children, Teressa and Michelle; step-daughters, Julia and Linda; and his sisters, Ruth, Mable, and Vickie; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At Mike's request, there will be no services. If you wish to honor his memory, donations may be made in Mike's name to Pleasantville Emergency Services.
Mike will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his hard work, kind heart, and the legacy he leaves behind in the lives he touched.
"Ride high, Mike, and enjoy the open road forever. You are loved beyond measure." — Love Forever
