IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael "Mike"
Sheil
August 14, 1941 – July 11, 2024
Mike, Pooh, Papa, Coach, Sheily, Waylon, Mr. Sheil, the many names for the man who was loved by and will be missed by many. Mike passed away July 11, 2024 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Mike was born August 14, 1941 in Madison, WI to Joseph Mark and Mary Francis (Kelly). He grew up in Watertown, SD where he enjoyed playing baseball and time spent with his two brothers, Patrick and Timothy. Mike earned his bachelor and master's degrees from The University of South Dakota.
On June 5, 1965 Mike married the love of his life, Constance (Stewart). They welcomed three children, Shannon, Brendan, and Stephanie and were later blessed with ten grandchildren. The roles of husband, father and papa brought the most joy to Mike's life.
In addition to his family, Mike had a passion for teaching and coaching, dedicating many years of his life to working with young people, starting his career at Lawton-Bronson before moving to the Indianola School District. He was a favorite teacher and coach for many students; fair, patient, wanted you to give your best, and was rewarded when he saw the difference he made in others. He never liked excuses and he loved to win. He spent years coaching baseball, football, track, and golf. When Mike wasn't calling the plays, he was calling the penalties and fouls on the football field and basketball court. He never missed a call no matter what the players, coaches or fans thought.
Mike also loved traveling with Conny, country western music (always having a lyric to share no matter what the situation), watching sports talk shows, Notre Dame football, the New York Yankees, reading crime fiction novels, doing crosswords, challenging his family to Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, making his delicious ham balls, playing golf, and cheering on his grandkids.
Mike always gave more to others than he ever expected in return. He had a quick wit and his wisdom and values will live on with those he touched over the years. He taught us to work hard, be kind, pick our battles, not take any wooden nickels and always have faith.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, parents in-law Eugene and Betty Wettermark, brother-in-law Charles Stewart, granddaughter Bethany Sheil.
Mike is survived by his wife, sons Shannon and Brendan Sheil, daughter Stephanie (Jason) Marvelli, God sent son Jon Overton (Tami), grandchildren Jacob and Anna Marvelli, Carrington, Landon, Brady, Noah, Rory and Rhys Sheil, Kaitlynn and Nathan Overton, great grandson Zen Coleman. Sisters-in-law Lynn Sheil, Merry Stewart, Florence Lamphear. Nieces Jill Stewart, Amy Bodensteiner and Kendra Sheil. Nephew Sean Sheil.
A special thank you to the wonderful doctors and nurses who have cared for Mike over the years, especially the entire staff at Westview Care Center and Suncrest Hospice.
A Memorial Funeral Mass for Mike will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2024 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
