Obituary

Private family services for Michael Everett Baker, 76, of Indianola, IA, who passed away Thursday, December 24, 2020, in Des Moines, will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2020.  Friends may join the family on Michael's obituary page of Overton Funeral Home's website beginning at 7 p.m., Wednesday evening.  Public visitation will be held from 4 to 6:45 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.  Cremation will follow services with inurnment of cremains to be held at a later date in the Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.

Michael was born on December 9, 1944 in Des Moines, to Hazen Everett and Mary Kathleen (Sappenfield) Baker.  Michael graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in May of 1963 and entered into the United States Army three days following graduation.  He served two enlistments and was discharged on January 11, 1970, serving during the Vietnam Conflict.

Following his discharge, he worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber, Iowa Power for 17 years and retired from the City of Des Moines after more than 15 years.  He was united in marriage to Dixie Lea Wineinger for 25 years until her passing.  He then married Cathy Arnold and they were married for almost 25 years.

He enjoyed bowling, watching westerns and WWE on TV, playing with his fur buddies, dog sitting, watching military documentaries, spending time with his family, and visits with anyone.

Michael is survived by his wife, Cathy Baker; daughters, Tracie (Tom) Dodge and Taffi (Glen) O'Connor; grandchildren, Colton (Jasmine) Barton, Nathan and Andrew Moody, Alexis (Connor) Young and Cheyenne and Mason Dodge; great-grandchildren, Grace Miller and soon to make her appearance Olive Young; best friend, Claudia (Pat) Gathercole and a host of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dixie Lea Baker; parents, Hazen and Mary Baker; brothers, Jimmy Baker, Robert "Bob", Johnny and Richard Sirfus and sister, Maxine Reginski.

The family requests that those in attendance bring a can of soup to be donated to the "Helping Hand" in Indianola or memorials may be directed to Kiya Koda Humane Society or the American Legion Post # 165.
