A memorial visitation for Merrill Duane Johnson, 81, who passed away Thursday, January 28, 2016, will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 5 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial of cremains will be held at a later date in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter, IA.

He was born February, 5 1934 in Norwalk Iowa. He grew up in Indianola and attended Indianola schools, graduating in 1952. He served in the U.S. army from 1955 to 1961. Merrill was a Master carpenter, he worked for several builders, including McCord development, Johnston Development, and retiring from Crose Lempke.

Merrill was an avid bicyclist, riding thousands of miles in his lifetime including an 82 mile trek across Death Valley. He also loved camping, kayaking, and canoeing, especially on the Upper Iowa River.

He is survived by his children, Jay (Dr. Jill) Johnson, Lori (Jeff) Grim and Carrie Johnson; step-children, Theresa Benge and, David McVicker ; step-mother, Wanda Johnson; sister, Rita Conejo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren as-well-as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Fern (Keeling) Johnson; two sisters, Ruth (Faye) Jolly and Jeanne (Duane) Woodruff.

He will be missed by all of his buddies in their Tuesday lunch group.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Warren County Conservation for bike trails.
