Heckman, 78, who passed away, Sunday, March 30, 2014 of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 3 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the New Virginia Cemetery. Melvin was born July 14, 1935 to William G. and Ruby (Peterson) Heckman in Anita, Iowa. He served in the United States Army for two years stationed at Boeblinger, Germany in the 595 Signal Support Company. He farmed for 30 years and worked for the Warren County Secondary Road Department for 12 years, before retiring in 2000. Survivors include his wife, Erma; children, Wendy Heckman, Wendell Heckman, Wanita (Jim) Steinberger and Wesley Heckman; daughter-in-law, Valerie (Heckman) Kintz; brother, Delbert (Joyce) Heckman; sister, Norma Eberly; and grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan and Danielle Heckman, Grant and Garrett Heckman, Justin, Christina, Melinda and Trevor Steinberger; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William G. and Ruby Heckman; sisters, Shirley Crawford and Ramona Reynolds Reed; son, Winton and daughter-in-law Cynthia (Updike) Heckman.
