Melvin had lived in Indianola all his life where he was a trucker and farmed. He was an Army Veteran of WW II in the 34th Red Bull Division – 168th Infantry from 1941 – 1945 after which he was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. He enjoyed traveling and being with family.
He is survived by his wife Jeannette; children Larry of Des Moines, Donna (Rod) Byers of Sully, IA; 5 grandchildren Kelly (Ben) Meyer, Scott Flesher, Tracy (Joe) Benda, Steve (Laura) Byers of Otley, IA, Joe (Amanda) Byers of Nixa, MO; 2 great-grandchildren, Luke Byers and Ryan Meyer.
Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 14 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present from 5 – 7:00 p.m. to greet friends. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines. Online condolences may be sent at www.overtonfunerals.com.
