Obituary

MAYNARD J. V. HAYDEN Indianola Maynard was born May 15, 1930, in Ottumwa, IA, to Jay and Eunice (Sutherland) Hayden. Following graduation from Eldon, IA High School in 1947, he farmed for five years then attended Drake University at Des Moines, IA. His education at the Drake Law School was interrupted by the Korean conflict when he served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. Maynard practiced law in Indianola forming a law partnership in 1966 with M.D. Hall, and Dale Ewalt. Stephen A. Hall became a partner later. Maynard served as Warren County attorney from 1964 to 1967. He was appointed a judge of the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa in 1973 and later served as chief judge until he was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1983. He retired in 1996, then continued as a senior judge until 2004. Maynard and Sharon Lee Stevenson, the love of his life, were married December 27, 1953. Sharon passed away September 19, 2008. His brother, Thomas, and sister, Patricia, also preceded him in death. Judge Hayden was a member of many professional and civic organizations including but not limited to the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, Association of Iowa Trial Attorneys, Iowa Defense Council, Iowa Judges Association, a long-term member of the Iowa Crime Commission, and Rotary International Club. He was a 45-year member of American Legion Post 165. Maynard never met a stranger he did not like, although, he has said there were a couple he should have. He leaves a special thanks to Dr. William Wickemeyer and the Iowa Heart Center for their professional care during the last 25 years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Indianola, Iowa, Indianola Public Library, and the Iowa Heart Center. He leaves behind his children, Lori, Christi, and Steven (Dee) Hayden and grandchildren, Audrey, Alex, Johnathan, Cameron, Madalyn, and Zoe. Maynard is also survived by his identical twin brother, Leonard; brother, Adrian; sisters, Barbara and Agatha.
