Obituary

Maxine LaVera Runyan was born to Clarence and Vera Herold July 12, 1928 near Lacona IA.  She went to be with her savior on  Friday, June 21, 2019, after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Maxine married Stanley Runyan December 7, 1947 and lived near Milo for a few years and later moved to Indianola to farm for Burle and John Long and raise their family of four. She worked at Seiler's bakery for 2 years then returned to school to get her GED, LPN and nursing home administrators license.  She and Stan purchased Gray's nursing and later built Westview Care Center where they worked side by side until 1985.

Maxine and Stan retired and enjoyed traveling in their mini home and making several trips to Canada fishing. Maxine opened an in-home day care in which she loved being a caregiver to many wonderful children whom she loved as her own. She was a cornerstone member of Mt Calvary Lutheran Church and was very active helping with Sunday school, bible school, LWML, serving on several boards, and being a Sunday morning greeter. She was always available to help were needed. She loved gardening, cooking, fishing, camping, and being with family. She will forever be remembered for her warm smile, infectious laugh and her giving spirit.  She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan as well as a Chicago Cubs baseball fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; parents, Clarence and Vera Herold; sister, Lucille Barnes; and brother, Darrell Herold. She is survived by her daughter, Karla (Dennis) Derrickson; sons, Richard Runyan, Jeffrey (Julie) Runyan, and Joel Runyan; seven grandchildren, Justin Derrickson, Tyler Derrickson, Sara Runyan, Megan Runyan, Greg Markey, Logan Runyan, and Dylan Runyan; five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Hunter, Taelor, Riley, and Conner Derrickson; brothers, James (Shirley) Herold and Melvin (Harriet) Herold; sister-in-law, Marilyn Runyan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
