S. Maxine Lee, 97, of Indianola, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Windsor Manor in Indianola. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, July 21 at Overton Funeral Home with visitation held 9:30 to 11 a.m., prior to service. Following services, Maxine has elected to make an anatomical gift to Des Moines University.
Maxine was born July 27, 1925, at Gilbert, Iowa, to James and Lillian (Strigel) Barrie, joining older siblings James Nelson, John Robert, and Lillian Berniece. Rounding out the family was her younger brother William Sydney.
She graduated from Gilbert High in 1943, and following some secondary education, met Keith Lee of Wick, Iowa, to whom she was wed on Sept. 30, 1946. To this union, four sons were born; Barrie E., James W., Thomas L., and Richard A.
Maxine worked at various places as the need arose including Massey Ferguson, Meredith Publishing, and several departments for the State of Iowa, retiring in 1989 from the Iowa State Education Department, teacher certification division. She was never a career minded person, rather enjoying working with her husband and sons in church functions, Scouts and various sporting activities. Following full retirement, she enjoyed helping Keith with various projects such as gardening, raising steers, latchhook and others. Maxine and Keith enjoyed 71 years together until his passing in 2018. Following his death, Maxine continued to enjoy crafting and game activities with her friends at Windsor.
Maxine is survived by her children, Barrie (Sandra) Lee, of Newton, James (Brenda) Lee, of Indianola, Thomas (Patty) Lee, of Monticello, Richard Lee, of Corbett, OR; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, William (Marilyn) Barrie, of Boone; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith; grandchildren, Virginia and Patrick Lee.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Windsor Manor and Suncrest Hospice for the excellent care they provided Maxine.
Memorials may be made in her name to the Indianola Church of Christ, Windsor Manor or Suncrest Hospice.
