Services for Mary Jean Garr, 63, who passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at, home in Bussey, IA. will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 18 at Overton Funeral Home with burial following in the Webb Cemetery, Norwalk, IA.
She was born December 10, 1953 in Des Moines, IA to Bill and Rose Wood. She attendced elementary school at Spring Hill and then Norwalk where she enjoyed riding her hourse Queeny in competitions at the Norwalk Saddle Club. In 1970 she was married to Jim Lawr, they had three children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She later moved to Bussey with Steve Sherman where they opened the Bussey Café with her sister and mother. She loved to cook and bake and farmers came from miles around to enjoy the food and company.
After selling the café she married Steve Garr and continued to work at Vermeer for a total of 23 years.
Mary loved camping, gardening, quilting, crafting with her grandchildren, riding motorcycles and especially shopping. She also had a large collection of cook books, rolling pins and antiques.
She was a selfless person that took care of her family in times of need and enjoyed volunteering to help organize family functions.
But most of all Mary's greatest joy was her grandchildren and family.
Survivors include her children, James (Brandie Baker) Lawr Jr., Dawn (Troy) Parker, Jason Lawr; husband, Steve Garr; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; mother, Rose Visser; siblings, Jim (Dee) Wood, Doris (Ross) Allen, Grace (Wes) Bonnett, Bill Wood, John Wood, Melody Wood; and many other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, James Wood Jr. and her grandparents.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, September 17 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Cancer Association.
