Obituary

MARY A. CRISWELL Indianola Mary Ann (Johnston) Criswell passed away Monday, June 23, 2014, at The Village in Indianola, IA, at the age of 87. The only child of Millard H. Johnston and Lelah M. (Loughman) Johnston, Mary was born in her parents' home in Seymour, IA, on February 12, 1927. Mary was raised in Seymour and graduated from Seymour High School in 1944. She was a star basketball player for Seymour, was first team all state and in 1984 was inducted into the Iowa High School Girls Basketball Hall of Fame. Mary attended Simpson College in Indianola and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. While a student at Simpson, she met her future husband, Myron O. (Cris) Criswell, while he was on leave from the Navy during WWII. They were married February 3, 1946, and remained so until Myron's death in February of 1999. They made their home in Indianola where Myron owned and operated Criswell's Feed and Seed Store. Mary worked as a secretary for lawyers Leo Tapscott and Dale Spencer in Des Moines. She also helped her husband at Criswell's Feed and Seed Store. Her passions included her family, friends and faith. Her interests included P.E.O. (where she was a past State President), bridge, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. Mary is survived by her daughter Barbara (Kent) Opheim of Waterloo; son John (Chris) Criswell of Indianola; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son D. Bruce Criswell. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Cremation will follow services and burial of cremains will be held at a later date in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 27 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to P.E.O. Projects, First United Methodist Church in Indianola, Warren County Historical Society in Indianola or Wayne County Historical Museum in Corydon.
